How Long Should a Candle Last? What Actually Affects Burn Time

Candle burn time is one of those things that varies a lot more than people expect. You buy two candles the same size and one lasts twice as long as the other. Here's why that happens and what to look for when you want a candle that actually goes the distance.

It's Not Just About Size

Burn time varies by candle design, not just wax weight. Wick size, fragrance load, wax type, vessel shape, and the number of wicks all affect how quickly a candle burns. Double-wick candles, for example, typically burn through wax faster than similar single-wick candles because two flames are consuming the wax at once. Always check the manufacturer's stated burn time rather than assuming based on weight alone.

Wax Type Makes a Big Difference

Paraffin wax burns hot and fast. It's cheaper to produce, which is why it's in most mass-market candles, but the tradeoff is shorter burn time and more soot.

Soy wax burns cooler and slower. Because it melts at a lower temperature, it releases fragrance more gradually and tends to last longer. Coconut soy (CocoSoy) is even better. The coconut wax component has a naturally creamy, dense structure that burns very evenly and extends burn time further without sacrificing scent throw.

If two candles are the same size but one is paraffin and one is CocoSoy, the CocoSoy will almost always outlast it.

Wick Size Matters Too

A wick that's too large for the jar creates a flame that's too hot. The wax melts faster than it should, the fragrance burns off quickly, and the candle is done sooner than it should be. You also get more soot and a less pleasant burn overall.

A properly sized cotton wick for the jar diameter gives you a steady, controlled melt pool that works through the wax at the right pace. This is one of the reasons wick selection matters when candles are made. It's not just about aesthetics.

Fragrance Load

Fragrance oil added to candle wax affects burn time. Too much fragrance and the wax can't bind it properly, which leads to uneven burning and a shorter life. Quality candle makers test their fragrance load carefully to find the right balance between strong scent throw and clean, even burning.

How You Burn It Changes Everything

This is the part most people don't think about, but it's probably the biggest variable after wax type:

  • First burn tunneling. If you don't let the wax melt all the way to the edges on the first burn, it tunnels down the center and you lose all the wax on the sides. That alone can cut your burn time significantly.
  • Wick length. A wick longer than 1/4 inch burns too hot and too fast. Trim it before every burn. If you're burning one of our eco wick candles, you may notice a small black mushroom tip forms at the end of the wick after burning. That's normal and nothing to worry about. Once the candle has cooled completely, just pinch it off with your fingers or a tissue, then check the length and trim if needed before your next burn. We have a full post on why wick trimming matters if you want the detail.
  • Burn session length. More than 3-4 hours at a stretch causes the wax to overheat. The candle burns faster and the scent throw actually gets worse, not better. Shorter sessions, more of them.
  • Drafts. A flickering flame from a draft burns unevenly and faster. Keep candles in still air.

We cover all of this in our post on common candle mistakes if you want the full picture.

The Short Version

Burn time comes down to wax type, wick design, fragrance load, and how you burn it. A well-made CocoSoy candle burned correctly will outlast a cheap paraffin candle of the same size by a significant margin. And the difference is noticeable in everyday use, not just on paper.

For more on candle care, our soy candle care instructions post covers everything you need to get the most out of every burn.
